1.1 REASONS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NIGERIAN SHIPPERS’ COUNCIL

In order to ensure full understanding and full appreciation of the functions of the Council, it is necessary to state here the reasons for the establishment of the Council. These are as follows:

• Nigerian shippers (cargo-owners) are weak and fragmented

• Shipping service providers (ship owners, etc) are organized & financially strong

• The need to address the above imbalance & provide a level playing field

• The need to organize shippers for stronger bargaining position

• The need to protect Nigeria’s cargo interest in shipping & international trade from abuse and exploitation

• The need to ensure cargo tariff structures are fair, equitable & reasonably stable

• The need to provide researched inputs to Federal overnment policies on shipping & international trade.
