THE ABUJA MOU ON PORT STATE CONTROL:

Abuja MoUThe Abuja MoU on Port State Control was established to ensure a system of harmonized inspection procedures designed to target and eradicate the operation of sub-standard vessels, improve the working and living condition of the crew, and protect the marine environment in the West and Central African region in compliance with the relevant international conventions.

Port State Control (PSC) is the inspection of foreign ships in national ports to verify that the condition of the ship and its equipment comply with the requirements of international conventions, and that the ship is operated in compliance with applicable maritime laws.

The memorandum is comprised of the following nineteen (19) member countries: Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mauritania, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Togo.

Abuja MoUNigerian Shippers’ Council was selected to temporarily host the Regional Information Centre, which will coordinate activities of the National Centres to be established later. The Council, in conjunction with the Secretariat, is working with a Russian Consultant to implement the Abuja MoU Information System (AMIS).
