WORKSHOP ON STRATEGIES FOR LEADING EMPOWERED TEAMS FOR QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY, SEPTEMBER 2005

In support of the effort of the Federal Government to bring rapid improvement to the provision of public services to all citizens of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Transport organized a workshop for its middle level officers on “Strategies for Leading Empowered Teams for Quality Service Delivery”

The objectives of the reform are to:
  • Improve the performance of the public sector
  • Accelerate overall national development
  • Improve accountability, due process and minimize corruption
  • Provide services that meet the needs of all citizens

The seminar was facilitated by Imperial Associates Limited in association with Graduate Institute of Management and Technology, South Africa at Protea Hotel, Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, Enugu State from the 19th to 23rd of September, 2005. The workshop recognized effective teamwork as the ultimate objective for leading empowered teams. The strategies taught include the need for
  • Leaders to work with their teams to keep customers satisfied and how to positively deal with barriers restricting team work
  • Develop participants as managers to recognize areas that create gaps between what they provide and what the customer expects.
  • Customer focuses by learning the pathways of becoming more responsive and customer oriented.


Participants at the workshop were drawn from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, National Maritime Authority, Nigerian Railway Corporation, Joint Maritime Labour Industrial Council, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology and Maritime Academy of Nigeria.

The workshop was conducted under a highly interactive and participatory atmosphere. The quality of papers presented and discussions were impressive. The participants at the end of the syndicate exercises issued a 16-point Communiqué.
